MEXICO CITY -- Colombian writer and Nobel laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez hailed journalism as the best profession, in rare public comments in northern Mexico.

"There's no better job" than journalism, said the 81-year-old author of 'One Hundred Years of Solitude,' who started out as a journalist and often says he writes to avoid having to speak.

Just when I'm starting to think I'm in the wrong job, my colleague Tarra placed this story in her blog. And I want to agree. :) Of course I'm a little biased because I'm in this job.

However, I know there's a world out there and it's all for the taking. What if this is not the world I'm supposed to be in? Where do I go?

  8. My favorite mix of the two is The Last King of Scotland -- a fictional novel based on historical events, by a journalist who reported during that era.

(Just so you can keep score Idi Amin of course was a real character, the doctor wasn't, the events were novelized)

The great thing about being a journalist first is that it gives you a broader view of the world around us and how it works.

That said, I'm afraid I've chosen to jump into the novel format now, largely because I can't let go of the novel that's attached itself to my brainstem like one of those Sigourney Weaver aliens...

  10. it shouldn't be too surprising. even our very own nick joaquin worked as a journalist in his younger years. every single day journalists are exposed to potential materials for short stories, novels and poems. if i had the stomach for it, i'd be a journalist, too, so i can get my hands on those stories =)

  14. what tarra said is right. there are the lows and highs. you will see the underside of humanity and society. and then you will see triumphs over adversity. that's what makes it worth the while.
